Electric motor for bicycle

Front Wheel Engine, Middle-Engine or Rear Wheel Engine?

The right solution depends on your bike and your preferences. All three options have different advantages:

Rear Wheel Motors...

  • offer the greatest possible safety as they are mounted in the stable rear frame of the bicycle.
  • have the best power transmission: the centre of gravity of the bicycle is on the rear wheel.
  • can be easily combined with a hub dynamo in the front wheel.

We generally prefer the installation of rear-wheel motors. An exception is the case with hub gears,
in this case a front wheel motor or a middle motor should be selected.

Front Wheel Motors...

  • are very easy to install. The front wheel can be changed quickly in the event of a puncture.
  • are compatible with most suspension forks. Exceptions are lightweight suspension forks.

We recommend front wheel motors especially if a rear wheel motor is not an option. In general, the differences in driving behaviour at normal gradients and speeds up to 25 km/h are negligible.

Measure the inner distance between the dropouts of your bike: 135 mm is required for the rear end and 100 mm for the fork.

Mid-Engines...

  • are ideal for all types of gears, including hub gears such as Rohloff, NuVinci, etc. due to their seat on the bottom bracket.
  • are compatible with all types of brakes, including roller brakes.
  • are very compact, as the controller, the PAS disc and the pedal sensor are already integrated in the motor.

We recommend mid-mounted motors, especially if you want to keep your existing gears or if you have a roller or drum brake.

Measure the width of the bottom bracket of your bike: For an installation you need 68 mm. Also note the dimensions of your frame. A detailed frame sketch can be found in the picture gallery in the products.
