Pedelec (250W) ou e-bike (>250W)?
What Does Pedelec Mean?
With pedelecs the motor only supports you while you are pedalling and only to a maximum speed of 25kph (15mph). Pedelecs are electric bicycles that are by legislation considered as normal bikes. If you do not wish to go faster than 25kph and your do not want to have your bike registered, then a pedelec conversion kit might be the right choice for you.
Pedelec or E-Bike?
E-Bikes can go faster than 25kph and have a motor that provides more than 250W of power. For acceleration you can use a power throttle; So you don't need to pedal to be supported. By legislation e-bikes are treated not as bicycles but as mopeds or scooters. If want to travel roads under the jurisdiction of the StVO (German road traffic regulation) you will need a license plate and an operating license (in Germany from TÜV or similar organisation). An e-bike conversion kit might be the right choice for you, if you wish to go faster than 25kph or to have a motor with more than 250W of power.
